You're welcomed with a warm greeting in the Gikuyu language, a sip of authentic traditional Gikuyu brew (Muratina), and a cleansing handwash ritual using scented herbal water.
Our centre is led by local Agikuyu families, ensuring a culturally respectful and immersive experience that combines food, music, storytelling, and traditions.

Try out traditional Agikuyu attire including shukas, leather garments, and beaded accessories. Learn the meaning behind traditional bead colors and take photos dressed as a Kikuyu elder, warrior, or maiden.
Sit with an elder who shares captivating stories about the origin of the Agikuyu, traditional governance, age-set systems, and the cultural significance of Mount Kenya. Learn how colonial history shaped modern Agikuyu identity.
Learn the basics of the Gikuyu language including greetings, common phrases, and the meaning behind traditional names and proverbs. Our language classes are designed for all levels.
Comprehensive cooking classes where you'll learn:
Take a guided walk with a local herbalist (mugo wa miti) to learn about sacred trees like mugumo (fig tree) and medicinal plants used for healing, ceremonies, and blessings.
The highest spiritual leader who guides all ceremonial practices and maintains the sacred traditions of the Agikuyu people. Also the High priest appointed by the Elders and who speaks with God on behalf of the community of the Agíkúyú.
Senior elders and advisors who assist the Maturanguru in spiritual matters and community governance. They form a committee of Elders who make vital decisions on the well being of the whole community.
Ritual specialists and ceremonial leaders who give advise to the community on matters what ritual to perform and at what period. They also help in clearing any uncertainty in the procedure of rituals.
After getting the final go ahead from the advisors (Atonyi), the elders then perform the rituals as a remedy to any taboo that may seem to attract a curse. They can also undo curses in accordance with the magnitude of the punishments from the gods.
These elders qualify to witness rituals though not necessarily eligible to perform them.
Responsible for maintaining peace, resolving conflicts, and mediating disputes within the community. Also disciplinarians who ensure justice is served fairly.
Protectors of the community who also listen to disputes, conflicts, mediate but not allowed to charge the victims.
This is the first stage of dedication to elders. Mostly Young boys and youthful men are dedicated to Elders so that they advise them and show them what the community requires of them as they grow towards the Hierarchy.
Participate in or observe non-sacred ceremonies such as blessing rituals, marriage practices demonstrations, and traditional rites of passage storytelling (not actual initiation). These experiences are educational and respectful of cultural boundaries.
NO FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM) - The Nyakinyua Ya Ma department strictly condemns and does not practice Female Genital Mutilation. We are committed to the protection, health, and well-being of all girls and women. Our cultural teachings emphasize empowerment, education, and safe traditional practices that respect the dignity and rights of every individual.
